The zebrafish is a vertebrate that has the ability to regenerate organs and tissues throughout its adult life. Unlike mammals, this fish can repair different structures of the nervous system. In our laboratory, we study the regeneration of the neural retina after inducing different types of injuries that lead to visual function recovery, and we investigate the mechanisms involved in this regeneration. This includes cell proliferation, death, and differentiation, as well as factors (intercellular, hormonal, and epigenetic signaling mechanisms) involved in regulating angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and gliogenesis that lead to tissue repair and vision recovery.
