The Biomembranes Laboratory was founded in 1985 by Dr. Mario Parisi. Since then, its main focus has been the study of water and solute transfer in cellular membranes and epithelial barriers. The discovery of water channels in cells (known as aquaporins) in 1994 opened up a prominent field of research in which the Laboratory became involved, approaching the study from bio-physical, physiological, and pathophysiological aspects.
